Top 5 songs this time of year

For maximum effect, play these songs over this video :)

I love holiday music, I really do. Primo examples of my favorites and why they deserve a place by your hearth this Yule.

1. Mormon Tabernacle Choir - Carol of the Bells.mp3
A powerful, joyous song in a minor chord. Too short for me... love it so much I always have to listen twice!

2. Vince Guaraldi Trio - Greensleeves.mp3
Just a beautiful, classic carol I love. The 1960's jazz musician Vince Guaraldi helped bring the genre into the mainstream by soundtracking the classic Peanuts flick "A Charlie Brown Christmas." In this track, they simply and beautifully muse on the theme with just piano, upright bass, and soft drums. Perfect mood music for more serene moments during the holidaze.

3. Boston Pops - Sleigh Ride.mp3
This song is all about the percussion. Like 19th Century Russian composer Modest Mussorgky's pieces such as "Night on Bald Mountain" and "Pictures at an Exhibition", The song is an example of literal story-telling, using the sounds to paint a picture. (modern example: Sufjan Stevens does this in The BQE.) The woodblock is the horse's feet, the bells jingling in time to the brisk pace in a flurry of snow. Listen for the whipcraks, and the trumpet's neigh at the end.

4. Barenaked Ladies - Auld Lang Syne.mp3
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought t' mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?
CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my jo,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp !
and surely I’ll be mine !
And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
CHORUS

It's basically Scottish for "Let's drink for old time's sake." Can't argue with that logic.

5. Kling, Glöckchen, Klingelingeling.mp3
This tender carol, according to Wikipedia, is "a German Christmas carol from the 19th century. The lyrics were written by Karl Enslin (1814–1875) to a traditional German folk tune." Translated as " Ring, Little Bell, Ring-a-ling-a-ling,"it uses German onomatopœia to tell the story of an angel that lights the way for children as they go door to door around the village. At each door, they ring bells and are invited in where they are given small toys and warm sweets. (Sounds fun!)
Some decades later, they popularized the Christmas tree, keeping the kids at home for the Christmas eve visit from the local pastor, and carols like this all but vanished. This was one of my favorites to sing as a kid, and I still love it now.

(FYI... Sufjan's "Songs For Christmas, Vol. VI: Gloria!" was just leaked! You can get the whole thing here. Here's hoping Vol. VII will eventually leak so all our collections can be completed.)

Inappropriate Christmas Mix

Here some tunes to play while you hoist the Festivus pole!

Christmas Card From A Hooker in Minneapolis - Tom Waits
You should know this one by now. If not, shame on you.

Cold White Christmas - Casiotone for the Painfully Alone
Sad song about spending Christmas alone in St. Paul. Dude, what is up with all these songs taking place in Minnesota? Remind me not to spend the holidays there, k thanks.

Depressed Christmas - Culturcide
Sung to the tune of "White Christmas" except with lower-than-lo-fi production. Oh and it's about suicide, no really it is!

Papa Ain't No Santa Claus (And Mama Ain't No Christmas Tree) - Butterbeans and Susie
This song was recorded in like the 1930's and it is HILARIOUS. The title kinda says it all

I Don't Love Anyone - Belle & Sebastian

NOT EVEN CHRISTMAS

Christmas in Jail, Ain't that a Pain - Leroy Carr

Yes, yes it is. Another Depression-era classic

Did I Make You Cry on Christmas (Well You Deserved It!) - Sufjan Stevens
Ouch Suf, that stings. I thought we were friends.

I Hate Christmas - Oscar the Grouch

Every December my family gathers around and watches that 80's Sesame Street special where Oscar tells Big Bird it's impossible for Santa to climb down chimneys. Which prompts Big Bird to wait on the rooftop all Christmas Eve night for the big man's arrival. He then freezes his giblets off. Classic.

Caroling with the Decemberists

OK, so, I feel slightly guilty for posting this, BUT it's just too fun not to share. Colin Meloy and Jenny Conlee of the Decemberists sing a couple of impromptu Christmas carols at a private holiday benefit held by the Oregon League of Conservation Voters, but oh look what happens when Colin spots the camera...

The only Christmas song that matters?

Some blogs only post cover songs. Some blogs only post Christmas songs.

Well, one blog only posts covers of one Christmas song. And not just any Christmas song, but THE Christmas song to end all Christmas songs - Wham's! heartbreakingly catchy "Last Christmas".

Believe it or not, Last Christmas (the blog) has been around for over 3 years! and has featured over 300 renditions of the now-classic song. I just can't believe it's taken me THIS long to discover it, but oh thank heaven I have.

And just because, I'll share one of my fave renditions

Last Christmas - Coldplay (Wham! cover)

Last Christmas I gave you my heart
But the very next day, you gave it away

Christmas on Ward 7

The dour, cyclical piano and the cryptic details of memories past haunt Chris Flew's "Christmas on Ward 7", which is easily one of the eeriest holiday-themed songs I've heard in a long, long time. Even if you're not locked away this Christmas, chances are you'll probably still relate to the feeling of alienation, as you long for a better time. Maybe next year, maybe next year...

Christmas on Ward 7 - Chris Flew

And I didn't see the Christmas lights
I started seeing red
Fighting losing battles with the voices in my head
I'm holding onto next year
And praying that it comes real soon

The Magnetic Fields - Parades Go By.m4a

  • Kermit has had, sadly, one of the best voices we've heard today.

Plastic Snow!

Ok so it's not even Thanksgiving yet, however that doesn't mean we can't crank up the Christmas tunes already. On that note, we'd like to highlight a brand-spanking-new album of holiday songs curated by our friends at Confessions of a Would-Be Hipster. Basically they gathered sixteen of their favorite LA bands(ah, so that's why the snow is plastic!) including Earlimart, Great Northern and Princeton and had them record seasonal standards and originals alike. And best of all, proceeds from the album go toward Midnight Mission which has been helping the homeless since 1914!

So what are you waiting for? Go download it here now, only ten bucks for great music and an even greater cause.

Here's a sneak peak:

Icicles - Let's Go Sailing

Still better than Sanjaya

Our art correspondent Miranda pointed me to this lovely entry at boingboing.net about the "scientifically" created World's Worst Song. Here's a description of what you can expect:
The most unwanted music is over 25 minutes long, veers wildly between loud and quiet sections, between fast and slow tempos, and features timbres of extremely high and low pitch, with each dichotomy presented in abrupt transition. The most unwanted orchestra was determined to be large, and features the accordion and bagpipe (which tie at 13% as the most unwanted instrument), banjo, flute, tuba, harp, organ, synthesizer (the only instrument that appears in both the most wanted and most unwanted ensembles). An operatic soprano raps and sings atonal music, advertising jingles, political slogans, and "elevator" music, and a children's choir sings jingles and holiday songs. The most unwanted subjects for lyrics are cowboys and holidays, and the most unwanted listening circumstances are involuntary exposure to commercials and elevator music. Therefore, it can be shown that if there is no covariance--someone who dislikes bagpipes is as likely to hate elevator music as someone who despises the organ, for example--fewer than 200 individuals of the world's total population would enjoy this piece.

Some actual lyrics:
Yom Kippur! Yom Kippur!

Self-Reflection and atonement!

Yom Kippur! Yom Kippur!

Do all your shopping... at Wal-Mart!

While some have noted that it sounds like They Might Be Giants and others claim that it's "not as horrible as anything by the Red Hot Chili Peppers" (ouch!) I can unironically appreciate the complexity here. It truly is a work of art. That being said, I don't see myself "rocking out" to this on a regular basis after my second listen. (Sure, it's cute now, but in four hours when you catch yourself humming "Labor Day! Labor Day! Do all your shopping... at Wal-Mart!" you will want to start punching children.)

If you're truly demented and enjoy making enemies, it's also available on iTunes... and modifible as a ringtone.

You've been warned.
